Budding Dual Language Bilingual Education Programs

El Brote, or “the bud,” is a retreat for Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) creating their Curriculum Alignment Plan.

El Brote is available as a one, two, or three-day retreat in which educators and coaches will learn how to create a Curriculum Alignment Plan which allocates to English or the partner language each component of the curriculum, including units, lessons, and activities, as well as strategically planning for cross-linguistic and cross-curricular transfer.

The goal is for participants to leave with the skills to create a clear standards-based dual language-specific scope and sequence that incorporates planning for strategic language use.

El Brote Includes:

  • One-day, two-day, or three-day (6-18 hours) curriculum planning retreat  (Depends on number of content areas and previous familiarity with selected curricula)

  • Standards-aligned curriculum scope-and-sequence development based on your program’s previously created Language Allocation Plan

  • Training and facilitation by veteran DLBE educators

  • Additional future planning resources from MABE

Outcomes:

  • Written summary report of the retreat with recommendations for next steps
  • Draft Curriculum Alignment Plan with detailed DLBE specific scope and sequence for curriculum implementation
  • Adapted curriculum units and lessons with specific plans for teaching cross-linguistic transfer (3-day retreat only)
  • Capacity building for teachers at each grade level to become curriculum alignment leaders

Participants:

  • Mandatory*:

    • One Elementary teacher per grade level per language to serve as curriculum alignment leader

    • All coaches who work in DLBE

  • Optional (but highly recommended):

    • Additional Elementary teachers from all grade levels

    • ESL teachers

    • Special Educators

    • Principal

    • District Director of Multilingual Learning

* Note: If principals, directors, and other leaders do not attend, they will be asked before the retreat to identify a system for teacher-led curricular decision-making.

Following El Brote, MABE can provide continued Technical Assistance and/or Professional Development.
