New Dual Language Education Program School Leadership Retreat

La Siembra  is a 2-full day retreat for school leadership teams to facilitate planning, preparation, and design of new dual language programs.  La Siembra was designed by Dual Language Education New Mexico (DLeNM).

Facilitators: Yael Zakon-Bourke, Deborah Sercombe, Amy Finsmith, Phyllis Hardy, and Katie Cardamone

The La Siembra program planing retreat includes:

  • Two days of intensive training and planning for key stakeholder groups from schools that have started or are planning to start a dual language program in the next two years.
  • Retreat organized around the Dual Language Program Planner: A Guide for Designing and Implementing Dual Language Programs
  • Training and facilitation by veteran dual language teachers.
  • Ultimate goal, for each team, is to leave the institute with a clear idea of what is needed to provide a high quality dual language program, and the beginnings of a team developed action plan.

Outcomes:

    • Action Plan includes, but is not limited to developing enrollment procedures, bilingual identification process, school language policy, staffing patterns, dispositions and competencies, and attending to equity and social justice issues (school climate and cross-cultural competency);
    • Communication Plan includes, but is not limited to outreach, ongoing education, and communication tools for all stakeholders (community, parents, all school staff, district leaders, school committee);
    • Curriculum Alignment Plan includes, but is not limited to language distribution and allocation decisions, biliteracy development, content area allocation for language of instruction, and scheduling for grades K – 5.

Schools must participate as a team including Principal or Assistant Principal; Teacher Leader (e.g. instructional coach or program coordinator); and a minimum of three teachers, who represent primary and intermediate grades. Participating teachers may include support teachers and non-dual language teachers. Other participants may include district support personnel, parents, board of education members, etc. A maximum of 8 participants per school permitted.
