Holistic Bilingualism and Assessment Series 

VIRTUAL PD: In this series, there are four different 2-hour and one 4-hour virtual Professional Developments offered the week of Monday, August 12 to Friday, August 16 at 9:30-11:30amZoom links will be sent out the first week in August. 

COST: The registration cost per 2-hour session for members is $90. Registration cost per 2-hour session for non-members is $140 (includes yearly $50 membership fee – learn more about MABE member benefits here). The 4-hour session has a cost of $180 for members and $230 for non-members. First select your member status, and then select the sessions you would like to attend. 

AUDIENCE: Designed for experienced DLE educators. Unless otherwise specified, examples of strategies in sessions will primarily focus on Spanish-English programs, but can be applied to any DLE programming.

SESSIONS: 

  • Monday, August 12 & Tuesday, August 13 - Please note that this session will take place in two parts over two days for a total of four hours. 
    Holistic Bilingualism and Assessment 
    FacilitatorSusan McGilvray-Rivet, DLE Educator & Consultant, MA 
    DescriptionThis 4-hour session will explore the rationale and process for creating and monitoring biliteracy benchmarks and trajectories based on the work of Kathy Escamilla and colleagues. Participants will evaluate their own biliteracy assessments and either produce a plan for creating benchmarks or revise their current plan for monitoring the biliteracy growth and development of their Dual Language Education (DLE) program students.
    This session is for leaders, coaches, interventionists, special educators, or any staff that conducts assessments and monitors growth in DLE programs. 
  • Wednesday, August 14
    Let’s Talk About It - As seen in MABE 2024 Conference 
    Facilitator:  Liliana Smith, Spanish Immersion Coordinator, Wayland Public Schools, MA
    Description: 
    During this interactive session, participants will explore ways to measure and follow second language oral proficiency. We will take a deep dive in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines and create rubrics to assess oral proficiency from Novice to Intermediate Mid. Participants will set these benchmarks for oral proficiency based on Can- do Statements. In addition, participants will create an interview protocol for each of the targets and learn how to use this formative assessment to improve instruction. We will also discuss ways to communicate progress to families and caregivers as well as methods to collect and store student’s production.
    This session is intended for teachers, curriculum leaders, and other practitioners interested in setting targets for oral production in DLE programs.

    Manuscrito - Herramienta de evaluación del desarrollo de la escritura en español - As seen in MABE 2024  
    Facilitator: Ayda Parra-Rojas, Dual Language Specialist, Windham Public Schools, CT
    Description: 
    How do we evaluate Spanish expressive writing using Spanish writing research and Spanish LAS-Links? 
    This session will respond to questions such as: How do we measure expressive writing in Spanish grades PK-8? How can we as educators effectively encourage creativity and expression in DL young writers while still focusing on Spanish foundational writing skills? How does having Manuscrito help teachers make decisions to analyze writing pieces and then figure out next steps? In this session, participants will learn how to analyze expressive Spanish writing samples with an authentic tool called Manuscrito. 

  • Friday, August 16
    Developing Local Assessments to Measure Student's Growth in Portuguese 
    Facilitator: Silvia Lima, Dual Language Coordinator, International Charter School, RI
    Description: In this session, teachers will see examples of how to create/adapt local assessments in Portuguese to measure students’ growth in language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.  

REGISTRATION: Registration closes Monday, August 1. Minimum of 10 registrants per PD.
