CROSS-LINGUISTIC PEDAGOGY series 

VIRTUAL PD: In this series, there are six different 2-hour virtual Professional Developments offered the week of Monday, August 12 to Friday, August 16 at 9:30-11:30amZoom links will be sent out the first week in August. 

COST: The registration cost per 2-hour session for members is $90. Registration cost per 2-hour session for non-members is $140 (includes yearly $50 membership fee – learn more about MABE member benefits here). First select your member status, and then select the sessions you would like to attend. 

AUDIENCE: Designed for DLE educators with 3+ years of experience. Unless otherwise specified, examples of strategies in sessions will primarily focus on Spanish-English programs, but can be applied to any DLE programming.

SESSIONS: 

Please note that we recommend anyone who registers for this series to attend the first session as well. 

  • Monday, August 12
    Linguistic Basics for the Dual Language Educator - NEW! 
    Facilitator: Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator & MABE Consultant, MA
    Description: In this session, we will review the components of effective language objectives and break language up into component parts to better understand language function and features. We will define metalinguistic awareness, crosslinguistic connections, and translanguaging and we will discuss how to make a place for these in our DLE classrooms. This course is recommended to start with for a shared understanding of key terms. It will be referenced in all other workshops.
  • Tuesday, August 13 
    Students As Language Detectives: Using metalinguistic awareness to build vocabulary in two languages - As seen in MABE 2023 Conference 
    Facilitator:  Rachel Gately, DLE Educator, Worcester Public Schools, MA
    Description: In this session, we will explore classroom tested metalinguistic strategies to help students build their own vocabulary and discover connections across languages. Participants will take on the role of a student to complete a routine that can be flexibly implemented in any classroom. Participants will leave with strategies and resources that can be implemented immediately, as well as ideas on how to get students excited to take ownership of their own learning and how to make vocabulary fun!

    Así Se Dice & Dictado: Strategies for Teaching Cross-Linguistic Connections 
    Facilitator: Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator & MABE Consultant, MA 
    Description: 
    This session is designed to share strategies from Literacy Squared’s Así Se Dice to explicitly teach cross linguistic connections in Spanish DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted metalinguistic awareness language objectives that compare and contrast English and a partner language in a contextualized setting, focusing on the difference between literal and conceptual translations. We will also share strategies from Literacy Squared’s Dictado to explicitly teach phonics, syntax and grammar in Spanish DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted metalinguistic awareness language objectives for dictation exercises that allow students to increase their academic language through writing and editing. 

  • Wednesday, August 14 
    Introduction to The Bridge 
    Facilitator:  Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator & MABE Consultant, MA  Description: This session is a brief introduction to The Bridge (based on Teaching for Biliteracy: Strengthening Bridges Between Languages) for teachers of DLE learners. We will review three components of the Bridge: a level one translation "bridge," a level two "Bridge" with a metalinguistic focus, and a follow-up activity to the bridge lesson. We will analyze a sample "bridge" from the elementary level and discuss the purpose of each of the three components. Participants will dive deeply into the metalinguistic awareness opportunities provided by the level two bridge and practice planning a sample bridge together

    Academic Conversations and Visible Thinking Routines: Introduction to Oracy Routines
    Facilitator: Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator & MABE Consultant, MA
    Description: 
    This PD opportunity is designed to share strategies from Jeff Zwier’s Academic Conversations to explicitly teach oracy in DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted language objectives for teaching discourse moves that allow students to increase their academic language through listening and speaking. We will also share strategies from Harvard's Project Zero's Visible Thinking Routines to explicitly teach oracy in DLE classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted language objectives for thinking routines that allow students to increase their academic language through listening and speaking.

  • Friday, August 16
    Scaffolding Oracy for Dual Language Learners

    Facilitator: Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator & MABE Consultant, MA
    Description: In this session, we will consider how to backwards design oracy activities for language. We will create a variety of scaffolding tiers to support oral language for students at different levels of language acquisition. Please make sure you have both a working understanding of the content covered in the Linguistic Basics for Dual Language Educator session (first session in series) AND a contextualized oracy strategy such as Academic Conversations, Visible Thinking Routines, or other Accountable Talk Strategy in order to sign up for this workshop.

REGISTRATION: Registration closes Monday, August 1. Minimum of 10 registrants per PD.
