SESSIONS:

  • Monday, August 14
Students as language detectives: Using metalinguistic awareness to build vocabulary in two languages
Facilitator: Rachel Gately, DLE Educator, Worcester, MA
    Description
In this professional development opportunity we will explore classroom tested metalinguistic strategies to help students build their own vocabulary and discover connections across languages. Participants will take on the role of a student to complete a routine that can be flexibly implemented in any classroom. Participants will leave with strategies and resources that can be implemented immediately, as well as ideas on how to get students excited to take ownership of their own learning and how to make vocabulary fun!
  • Tuesday, August 15
    Visible Thinking Routines (Oracy Strategies)
Facilitator:  Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator, Framingham, MA
    Description:
This professional development opportunity is designed to share strategies from Harvard's Project Zero's Visible Thinking Routines to explicitly teach oracy in dual language classrooms. Participants will discuss how to write targeted language objectives for thinking routines that allow students to increase their academic language through listening and speaking.
  • Wednesday, August 16
    Asi Se Dice & Dictado
Facilitator:  Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator, Framingham, MA
    Description:
This professional development opportunity is designed to share the DLE strategies of Literacy Squared's Asi Se Dice and Dictado, which target cross linguistic analysis. Participants will learn how to consider students' linguistic needs to write effective, targeted language objectives for these strategies so that students can develop their "superpower" of bilingualism – cross-linguistic connections
  • Thursday, August 17
    Intro to the Bridge
Facilitator:  Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator, Framingham, MA
Description:  This professional development opportunity is a brief introduction to The Bridge (based on Teaching for Biliteracy: Strengthening Bridges Between Languages) for teachers of DLE learners. We will review three components of the Bridge: a level one translation "bridge," a level two "Bridge" with a metalinguistic focus, and a follow-up activity to the bridge lesson. We will analyze a sample "bridge" from the elementary level and discuss the purpose of each of the three components. Participants will dive deeply into the metalinguistic awareness opportunities provided by the level two bridge and practice planning a sample bridge together.

  • Friday, August 17
    The Bridge (Workshop Model)
Facilitator:  Elissa Washburn, DLE Educator, Framingham, MA
Description: This professional development opportunity is for educators who have begun experimenting with the DLE strategy of The Bridge (based on Teaching for Biliteracy: Strengthening Bridges Between Languages) and would like to work collaboratively with colleagues to refine their practice. Please bring a unit or content area for which you would like to create a Bridge and we will consider the metalinguistic awareness opportunities that could be your area of focus and discuss potential follow-up activities. A basic understanding of the Bridge is required as this will be a coaching workshop where teachers will plan and refine a Bridge to be used in their classroom. Attending with your co-teachers in encouraged. This Summer Institute session can be partnered with "Intro to the Bridge."

AUDIENCE: Designed for educators at all levels in DLE programs. Examples of strategies in sessions will primarily focus on Spanish-English programs, but can be applied to any DLE programming.

REGISTRATION: Registration closes Tuesday, August 1. Minimum of 10 registrants per PD.
