Collaborating to Sustain and Grow Dual Language/Bilingual Education – Sharing responsibility for cultivating a linguistically diverse teacher workforce

TOPIC: This Pre-Conference Advocacy event will focus on how the shortage of bilingual teachers poses a considerable challenge to our education system, and an even more pressing challenge to our DLE programs. This Roundtable Discussion aims to bring together decision-making partners a meaningful discussion on the current state of bilingual teacher shortages and explore collaborative strategies to address this pressing issue. To illustrate the barriers to bilingual teacher shortages, MABE members will share their whitepaper highlighting the current state of bilingual teacher shortages in RI titled “Cultivating and Expanding the Bilingual Educator Workforce in Rhode Island.” The challenges, opportunities, and recommendations for policy makers, leaders, and institutions of higher education described in the white paper are the same experienced throughout the nation. Based on the recommendations from the white paper, we propose an action plan to create alternative pathways to increasing the number of qualified bilingual teachers in RI and beyond. We realize that this will happen with shared responsibility and commitment from all partners.

GOALSThe goals of the Roundtable are to provide you with an opportunity to:
