Second Language Development and Assessment of Oral Language
Facilitator: Joni Magee, M.Ed., C.A.G.S., Adjunct Professor, Lasell College
Learning to speak in a second language is often judged to be the most vital of the language skills. Oral language development is a precursor to and directly relates to literacy development, and is crucial for success in learning to be literate. This is especially true in second language acquisition as students learn to leverage their bilingualism. For dual language learners, speaking is often the least developed of students’ skills and their inability to adequately express themselves can have a negative impact on both their confidence and academic success. Authentic and frequent academic oral discourse opportunities, oral assessment administration and the provision of actionable feedback assists students in becoming successful speakers of a second language. Capturing and analyzing students’ oral academic language is a crucial component to supporting their second language development and serves as valuable formative and summative assessments.
